Bryant University Car Accident Smithfield, Rhode Island — Two Bryant University students have died following a wrong-way car crash on Route 146, university officials and local law enforcement confirmed today. The fatal collision involved a vehicle traveling in the wrong direction on the highway, striking another car in which the students were traveling.
The victims have been identified as Jaylin Rainford of Randolph, Massachusetts, and Chiemelie David OkonKwo of Lawrenceville, Georgia. Both were juniors at Bryant University and active members of the campus community.
Rainford was known for his involvement on the university’s track team and his leadership role as a resident assistant. OkonKwo was deeply engaged in student life, serving as Director of Black Enterprises for the Multicultural Student Union and as President of Shades of Strength. Friends and classmates described both students as dedicated, passionate, and admired by their peers.
The crash occurred early this morning when another vehicle entered Route 146 going against traffic, striking the students’ vehicle. Emergency responders arrived quickly, but Rainford and OkonKwo succumbed to their injuries.
